Lesson 2: Meet Five More Thai Letters
Welcome Back to Super Speed Thai!
In Lesson 1, you learned your first five Thai consonants and started using our memory-hook method.
Remember:
Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat
First, look carefully at the Thai letter.
Then, try to see something familiar in its shape.
Next, connect that image to the letter’s sound.
Finally, practise and review it until it becomes familiar.
Don’t worry if you don’t remember every letter immediately. That’s completely normal. The more you see the letters and retrieve them from memory, the easier they will become.
Today, we’re going to learn five more Thai consonants.
Before we start, can you remember the five letters from Lesson 1?
ก ข ค ม น
If you can’t remember them all yet, don’t worry. We’ll keep reviewing them as we go.
Today’s Five Letters
Just look. Don’t worry about remembering yet.
| Thai letter | Sound | Thai name |
|---|---|---|
| จ | j (jam) | จ จาน (jor jaan) |
| ด | d (dog) | ด เด็ก (dor dek) |
| ต | dt | ต เต่า (dtor tao) |
| บ | b (boy) | บ ใบไม้ (bor baimai) |
| ป | bp | ป ปลา (bpor bplaa) |
For now, your main goal is simple:
Recognise each letter and remember its basic sound.
You don’t need to learn to read Thai words yet.
You don’t need to memorise the traditional names yet.
For now, we’re training your eyes to recognise the letters.
Meet the Letters in More Detail
Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.
Remember, don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.
Instead, look carefully at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.
That picture will become your memory hook.
Letter 1 — จ
Sound: j, as in jam
Thai name: จ จาน (jor jaan)
Memory hook: Upside-down J 🔄
Take a good look at:
จ
What does the shape remind you of?
Can you see an upside-down J?
Look carefully at the main part of the shape.
Imagine turning the letter upside down.
Can you see the J?
Great!
Now make the connection:
จ → Upside-down J → j
Whenever you see จ, try to think:
จ → Upside-down J → j
You don’t need to worry about the Thai name yet.
Just look at the shape, imagine it flipped upside down, and remember the j sound.
Letter 2 — ด
Sound: d, as in dog
Thai name: ด เด็ก (dor dek)
Memory hook: 🐕 Dog
Now look carefully at:
ด
What does it look like to you?
Can you see a little dog?
Imagine you’re looking at a little dog from behind, with its tail sticking up.
Look carefully at the shape and try to picture the dog.
Can you see it?
Excellent!
Now make the connection:
ด → 🐕 Dog → d
The picture helps you remember the shape, while dog reinforces the d sound.
Whenever you see ด, think:
ด → Dog from behind→ d
Letter 3 — ต
Sound: dt
Thai name: ต เต่า (dtor tao)
Memory hook: 🐕 Dog 2
Now take a look at:
ต
Does it remind you of our previous dog?
Look carefully at the shape.
Imagine another little dog from behind.
But this time, notice the dip in its backside.
That small difference is important.
We now have two similar-looking dogs:
ด → Dog
ต → Dog 2
Can you see the difference?
Good!
Now make the connection:
ต → 🐕 Dog From behind 2 → dt
The similar memory hook helps you remember that these two letters are related.
The small difference in the shape helps you tell them apart.
So remember:
ด → Dog → d
ต → Dog 2 → dt
Don’t worry about perfecting the dt pronunciation yet.
We’ll practise it together.
Letter 4 — บ
Sound: b, as in boy
Thai name: บ ใบไม้ (bor baimai)
Memory hook: 🪣 Bucket
Now look carefully at:
บ
What does it look like to you?
Can you see a bucket?
Look at the little loop on the left.
Imagine that it is the handle of a bucket.
The shape of the character becomes a little bucket.
Can you see it?
Great!
Now make the connection:
บ → 🪣 Bucket → b
Whenever you see บ, think:
บ → Bucket → b
Letter 5 — ป
Sound: bp
Thai name: ป ปลา (bpor bplaa)
Memory hook: 📚 Bookend
Now look closely at:
ป
What does it remind you of?
Can you see a bookend?
Imagine it as a bookend — the object you put beside a row of books to hold them upright.
Look carefully at the shape and imagine it standing beside a row of books.
Can you see your bookend?
Excellent!
Now make the connection:
ป → 📚 Bookend → bp
Don’t worry about perfecting the pronunciation yet.
We’ll practise it together.
Whenever you see ป, think:
ป → Bookend → bp
Let’s Put Them Together
Now look at all five letters again:
จ ด ต บ ป
Before you think about the sounds, try to see the pictures.
จ → Upside-down J
ด → 🐕 Dog → d
ต → 🐕 Dog 2 → dt
บ → 🪣 Bucket → b
ป → 📚 Bookend → bp
Don’t worry if you can’t remember all five perfectly yet.
The important thing is that you’re actively looking at the shape and trying to see the picture.
Notice something interesting about ด and ต.
They use similar memory hooks:
ด → Dog → d
ต → Dog 2 → dt
The similar pictures help you remember that the shapes are related, while the small difference helps you tell the letters apart.
Drill 1 — Letter → Sound
