    Meet Five More Thai Letters

Welcome back to super speed Thai!

You’re doing great. You’ve already learned 20 Thai letters, and today we’re going to add five more.

    Remember our method:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

We’ll look carefully at each letter, find something familiar in its shape, and use that as your memory hook.

Don’t worry if you don’t remember everything straight away. The more you look at the letters and make the connections, the easier they become.

    Today’s Five Letters

Just look at the letters for now. Don’t worry about remembering them yet.

    Thai letterBasic soundTraditional name
    ฬl (light)จุฬา (lo chula)
อsilent / vowel carrierอ่าง (or ang)
    ฮh (hat)นกฮูก (hor nok-huk)
    ผph (puff)ผึ้ง (pho phueng)
    ฝf (fish)ฝา (fo fa)

Your goal today is simply to start recognising these five shapes and connecting them with their sounds or function.

    Meet the Letters

Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.

Don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.

Instead, look carefully at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.

That picture will become your memory hook.

    Letter 1 – ฬ

    Sound: l (light)

    Thai name: จุฬา (lo chula)

    Memory Hook: 🔄 Loops on a W

    Look carefully at:

    ฬ

Can you see the W-like shape at the bottom, with the extra loops?

Imagine a W with loops on top of it.

    Can you see it?

    🔄 Loops on a W

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ฬ → 🔄 Loops on a W → l

Look at the letter again and picture the loops on the W.

    Letter 2 – อ

    Sound: silent / vowel carrier

    Thai name: อ่าง (or ang)

    Memory Hook: 🏺 Open Container

    Look carefully at:

    อ

Can you see how the shape looks like an open container?

Imagine it as a container that is open at the top.

Now imagine lifting it up and pouring out some liquid from the inside.

    Can you see it?

    🏺 Open Container

    Great!

This letter acts as a vowel carrier. Vowels can sit around it.

You don’t need to worry about understanding that yet. Just remember the shape.

    Now make the connection:

    อ → 🏺 Open Container → silent / vowel carrier

    Letter 3 – ฮ

    Sound: h (hat)

    Thai name: นกฮูก (hor nok-huk)

    Memory Hook: 😇 Halo

    Look carefully at:

    ฮ

Can you see the loop at the top?

It looks a little like a halo sitting on the letter.

Imagine the letter with a halo on top of it.

    Can you see it?

    😇 Halo on a Letter.

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ฮ → 😇 Halo → h

Whenever you look at ฮ, picture the halo.

    Letter 4 – ผ

    Sound: P + breath 💨

    Thai name: ผึ้ง (pho phueng)

    Memory Hook: 🔄 Person sitting.

    Now look carefully at:

    ผ

Can you see a little person sitting with their knees up? Their feet are against a wall.

Now imagine the person sitting there, resting their feet against the wall.

    Think:

    Person sitting

    Can you see it?

    Great!

    🔄 Person sitting

    Now make the connection:

    ผ → 🔄 person sitting→ P + breath 💨

When you see ผ, imagine a person sitting.

    Letter 5- ฝ

    Sound: f (fish)

    Thai name: ฝา (fo fa)

Memory Hook: 😂 Funny looking W.

    Look carefully at:

    ฝ

Can you see the shape looks a little like a W?

But it’s not quite right. There is the p shape on the left and a very long line on the right. It’s a funny looking W.

Imagine someone trying to draw a W but getting it very wrong.

    Can you see it?

    Make the connection.

    ฝ → 😂 Funny looking W → f

Every time you see ฝ, think of funny looking W = f

    Let’s Put Them Together

Now let’s look at all five letters together.

    ฬ → 🔄 Loops on a W → l

    อ → 🏺 Open Container → silent / vowel carrier

    ฮ → 😇 Halo → h

    ผ → 🔄 P on an H → ph (puff).

    ฝ → 😂 Funny looking W→ f

    Remember:

Letter → Memory Hook → Sound

    Drill 1 — Letter → Sound

Look at each letter and say the sound.

    Lesson 4

    Meet Five More Thai Letters

Welcome back to Super Speed Thai!

In the previous lessons, you’ve been learning Thai consonants using our memory-hook method.

    Remember:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

First, look carefully at the Thai letter.

Then, try to see something familiar in its shape.

Next, connect that image to the letter’s sound.

Finally, practise and review it until it becomes familiar.

Don’t worry if you don’t remember every letter immediately. That’s completely normal. The more you see the letters and retrieve them from memory, the easier they will become.

Today, we’re going to learn five more Thai consonants.

Before we start, can you remember some of the letters from the previous lessons?

    ก ข ค ม น

    จ ด ต บ ป

    ฉ ช ซ ง ย

If you can’t remember them all yet, don’t worry. We’ll keep reviewing them as we go.

    Today’s Five Letters

Just look. Don’t worry about remembering yet.

    Thai letterSoundThai name
    รr (red)รอเรือ (ror ruea)
    ลl (light)ลอลิง (lor ling)
    วw (water)วอแหวน (wor waen)
    สs (sun)สอเสือ (sor suea)
    หh (hat)หอหีบ (hor hip)

For now, your main goal is simple:

Recognise each letter and remember its basic sound.

You don’t need to learn to read Thai words yet.

You don’t need to memorise the traditional names yet.

For now, we’re training your eyes to recognise the letters.

    Meet the Letters

Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.

Don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.

Instead, look carefully at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.

That picture will become your memory hook.

    Letter 1 — ร

    Sound: r, as in red

    Thai name: รอเรือ (ror ruea)

Memory hook: 🪢 Rope hanging down

    Take a good look at:

    ร

    Can you see a rope?

Imagine a rope curling a little and hanging down.

Look carefully at the shape and picture the rope in your mind.

    Can you see it?

    ร 🪢

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ร → 🪢 Rope hanging down→ r

    Whenever you see ร, think:

    ร → Rope hanging down→ r

Just look at the shape, picture the rope, and remember the r sound.

    Letter 2 — ล

    Sound: l, as in light

    Thai name: ลอลิง (lor ling)

    Memory hook: 🥌 Handle

    Now look carefully at:

    ล

What does the shape remind you of?

Look at the upper part of the letter.

It rises up and the top extends across, like the handle of something you could put your hand on and lift.

Imagine holding the handle and lifting the letter up.

    Can you see it?

    ล 🥌

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ล → 🥌 Handle → l

The word handle contains the l sound.

    Whenever you see ล, think:

    ล → Handle → l

    Letter 3 — ว

    Sound: w, as in water

    Thai name: วอแหวน (wor waen)

Memory hook: 🚰 Water from a tap

    Now look carefully at:

    ว

What does the shape remind you of?

It has a curved, overhanging shape that looks like a kitchen tap.

Look at the small loop at the bottom.

Imagine that this is water dripping from the tap.

    Can you see it?

    ว 🚰

    Good!

    Now make the connection:

    ว → 🚰 Water dripping from a tap → w

    Whenever you see ว, think:

    ว → Water dripping from a tap→ w

    Letter 4 — ส

    Sound: s, as in sun

    Thai name: สอเสือ (sor suea)

    Memory hook: Distorted S

    Now look carefully at:

    ส

What does the shape remind you of?

It almost looks like an S lying on its side.

    But it isn’t a perfect S.

Imagine an S that has been slightly twisted or distorted.

    Can you see it?

    ส → S

    Good!

    Now make the connection:

    ส → Distorted S → s

The important thing is to recognise the shape.

    Whenever you see ส, think:

    ส → Distorted S → s

    Letter 5 — ห

    Sound: h, as in hat

    Thai name: หอหีบ (hor hip)

    Memory hook: H with hoops

    Now look carefully at:

    ห

What does the shape remind you of?

It already looks surprisingly similar to an English H, but with little hoops added to the top.

    Can you see the H?

Can you see the little hoops?

    ห → H

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ห → H with hoops → h

The shape itself gives you a very strong clue.

    Whenever you see ห, think:

    ห → H with hoops → h

    Easy!

    Let’s Put Them Together

Now look at all five letters again:

    ร ล ว ส ห

Before you think about the sounds, try to see the pictures.

    ร → 🪢 Rope → r

    ล → 🥌Handle → l

    ว → 🚰 Water dripping from a tap → w

    ส → Distorted S → s

    ห → H with hoops → h

Don’t worry if you can’t remember all five perfectly yet.

The important thing is that you’re actively looking at the shape and trying to see the picture.

That’s how we’re going to learn Thai in Super Speed Thai:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

    Drill 1 — Letter → Sound

    Now let’s test your recognition.

Try to answer each one before looking at the answers.

    1. ร = ?
    2. ล = ?

    2. ล = 🥌 Handle – l
    3. ว = 🚰 Water from a tap – w
    4. ส = Distorted S – s
    5. ห = H with hoops – h

    Drill 2 — Memory Hook → Letter

Now let’s go in the opposite direction.

Can you use the memory hook to find the correct Thai letter?

    1. 🪢 Rope = ?
    2. 🥌 Handle = ?
    3. 🚰 Water dripping from a tap = ?
    4. Distorted S = ?

    Lesson 3

    Meet Five More Thai Letters

Welcome back to Super Speed Thai!

In Lessons 1 and 2, you learned your first ten Thai consonants and started using our memory-hook method.

    Remember:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

First, look carefully at the Thai letter.

Then, try to see something familiar in its shape.

Next, connect that image to the letter’s sound.

Finally, practise and review it until it becomes familiar.

    ชch (chair)ช ช้าง (chor chang)
    ซs (sun)ซ โซ่ (sor so)
    งng (sing)ง งู (ngor nguu)
    ยy (yes)ย ยักษ์ (yor yak)

For now, your main goal is simple:

Recognise each letter and remember its basic sound.

You don’t need to learn to read Thai words yet.

You don’t need to memorise the traditional names yet.

For now, we’re training your eyes to recognise the letters.

    Meet the Letters

Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.

Don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.

Instead, look carefully at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.

That picture will become your memory hook.

    Letter 1 — ฉ

    Sound: ch, as in chair

Thai name: ฉ ฉิ่ง (chor ching)

    Memory hook: ⛓️ Chain

    Take a good look at:

    ฉ

Can you see a piece of chain?

Imagine that the shape is a single chain link.

Look carefully at the shape and picture a chain link in your mind.

    Can you see it?

    ฉ ⛓️

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ฉ → ⛓️ Chain → ch

    Whenever you see ฉ, think:

    ฉ → Chain → ch

You don’t need to worry about the Thai name yet.

Just look at the shape, picture the chain, and remember the ch sound.

    Letter 2 — ช

    Sound: ch, as in chair

Thai name: ช ช้าง (chor chang)

    Memory hook: 🫖 China teapot

    Now look carefully at:

    ช

What does the shape remind you of?

Can you see a China teapot?

    Look at the shape carefully.

    Imagine a traditional teapot with:

    • the handle on the left
    • the spout on the right

    Can you see it?

    ช 🫖

    Good!

    Now make the connection:

    ช → 🫖 China teapot → ch

The teapot helps you remember the shape, while China helps you remember the ch sound.

    Whenever you see ช, think:

    ช → China teapot → ch

    Letter 3 — ซ

    Sound: s, as in sun

Thai name: ซ โซ่ (sor so)

Memory hook: 🫖 Slightly different China teapot

    Now look carefully at:

    ซ

Does it remind you of the previous letter?

It also looks a little like a teapot.

    But look carefully.

There is a difference in the shape.

So imagine a slightly different China teapot.

    Can you see it?

    ซ 🫖

    Good!

Now focus on the important word:

    Slightly

The s in slightly gives you the sound.

    Now make the connection:

    ซ → 🫖 Slightly different China teapot → s

    Whenever you see ซ, think:

    ซ → Slightly different China teapot → s

This also helps you distinguish it from ช.

    Remember:

    ช → China teapot → ch

    ซ → Slightly different China teapot → s

The similar memory hooks help you see that the shapes are related, while the differences help you tell the letters apart.

    Letter 4 — ง

    Sound: ng, as in sing

Thai name: ง งู (ngor nguu)

    Memory hook: 🪝 Hanging hook

    Now look carefully at:

    ง

What does the shape remind you of?

Can you see a hanging hook for your clothes?

Imagine a hook that you use for hanging clothes.

Look carefully at the shape and picture the hook.

    Can you see it?

    ง 🪝

    Excellent!

    Now make the connection:

    ง → 🪝 Hanging hook → ng

The word hanging contains the ng sound.

    So remember:

    ง → Hanging hook → ng

Don’t worry about the pronunciation yet.

For now, look at the shape, picture the hanging hook, and remember ng.

    Letter 5 — ย

    Sound: y, as in yes

Thai name: ย ยักษ์ (yor yak)

Memory hook: 🧍 Little man facing the wall → Why?

    Now look carefully at:

    ย

What does the shape remind you of?

Imagine a little man standing on a platform, facing a wall.

Look carefully at the shape and picture the little man.

    Now ask yourself:

    Why?

Why is the little man standing there facing the wall?

    It’s a slightly silly image.

That’s exactly why it should stick.

Can you see your little man?

    ย 🧍

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ย → 🧍 Little man facing the wall → Why? → y

The word Why gives you the y sound.

    Whenever you see ย, think:

    ย → Little man facing the wall → Why? → y

    Let’s Put Them Together

Now look at all five letters again:

    ฉ ช ซ ง ย

Before you think about the sounds, try to see the pictures.

    ฉ → ⛓️ Chain → ch

    ช → 🫖 China teapot → ch

    ซ → 🫖 Slightly different China teapot → s

    ง → 🪝 Hanging hook → ng

    ย → 🧍 Little man facing the wall → Why? → y

Don’t worry if you can’t remember all five perfectly yet.

The important thing is that you’re actively looking at the shape and trying to see the picture.

NB: Notice something important about ช and ซ.

They have different sounds, but their shapes are similar.

That’s why the memory hooks are useful.

    ช → China teapot → ch

    ซ → Slightly different China teapot → s

The similar pictures help you see the relationship between the shapes, while the extra details help you tell the letters apart.

    Drill 1 — Letter → Sound

    Now let’s test your recognition.

Try to answer each one before looking at the answers.

For now, we’re training your eyes to recognise the letters.

Meet the Letters in More Detail

Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.

Remember, don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.

Instead, look carefully at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.

That picture will become your memory hook.

    Letter 1 — จ

    Sound: j, as in jam

Thai name: จ จาน (jor jaan)

    Memory hook: Upside-down J 🔄

    Take a good look at:

    จ

What does the shape remind you of?

Can you see an upside-down J?

Look carefully at the main part of the shape.

Imagine turning the letter upside down.

    Can you see the J?

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    จ → Upside-down J → j

Whenever you see จ, try to think:

    จ → Upside-down J → j

You don’t need to worry about the Thai name yet.

Just look at the shape, imagine it flipped upside down, and remember the j sound.

    Letter 2 — ด

    Sound: d, as in dog

Thai name: ด เด็ก (dor dek)

    Memory hook: 🐕 Dog

    Now look carefully at:

    ด

What does it look like to you?

Can you see a little dog?

Imagine you’re looking at a little dog from behind, with its tail sticking up.

Look carefully at the shape and try to picture the dog.

    Can you see it?

    Excellent!

    Now make the connection:

    ด → 🐕 Dog → d

The picture helps you remember the shape, while dog reinforces the d sound.

    Whenever you see ด, think:

    ด → Dog from behind→ d

    Letter 3 — ต

    Sound: dt

Thai name: ต เต่า (dtor tao)

    Memory hook: 🐕 Dog 2

    Now take a look at:

    ต

Does it remind you of our previous dog?

    Look carefully at the shape.

Imagine another little dog from behind.

But this time, notice the dip in its backside.

    That small difference is important.

We now have two similar-looking dogs:

    ด → Dog

    ต → Dog 2

    Can you see the difference?

    Good!

    Now make the connection:

    ต → 🐕 Dog From behind 2 → dt

The similar memory hook helps you remember that these two letters are related.

The small difference in the shape helps you tell them apart.

    So remember:

    ด → Dog → d

    ต → Dog 2 → dt

Don’t worry about perfecting the dt pronunciation yet.

    We’ll practise it together.

    Letter 4 — บ

    Sound: b, as in boy

Thai name: บ ใบไม้ (bor baimai)

    Memory hook: 🪣 Bucket

    Now look carefully at:

    บ

What does it look like to you?

    Can you see a bucket?

Look at the little loop on the left.

Imagine that it is the handle of a bucket.

The shape of the character becomes a little bucket.

    Can you see it?

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    บ → 🪣 Bucket → b

    Whenever you see บ, think:

    บ → Bucket → b

    Letter 5 — ป

    Sound: bp

Thai name: ป ปลา (bpor bplaa)

    Memory hook: 📚 Bookend

    Now look closely at:

    ป

What does it remind you of?

    Can you see a bookend?

Imagine it as a bookend — the object you put beside a row of books to hold them upright.

Look carefully at the shape and imagine it standing beside a row of books.

    Can you see your bookend?

    Excellent!

    Now make the connection:

    ป → 📚 Bookend → bp

Don’t worry about perfecting the pronunciation yet.

    We’ll practise it together.

    Whenever you see ป, think:

    ป → Bookend → bp

    Let’s Put Them Together

Now look at all five letters again:

    จ ด ต บ ป

Before you think about the sounds, try to see the pictures.

    จ → Upside-down J

    ด → 🐕 Dog → d

    ต → 🐕 Dog 2 → dt

    บ → 🪣 Bucket → b

    ป → 📚 Bookend → bp

Don’t worry if you can’t remember all five perfectly yet.

The important thing is that you’re actively looking at the shape and trying to see the picture.

Notice something interesting about ด and ต.

    They use similar memory hooks:

    ด → Dog → d

    ต → Dog 2 → dt

The similar pictures help you remember that the shapes are related, while the small difference helps you tell the letters apart.

    Drill 1 — Letter → Sound

Now let’s see if you can remember.

Try to answer each one before looking at the answers.

Ten letters down. You’re making great progress! 🇹🇭

  • Super Speed Thai Alphabet 1

    Welcome to Super Speed Thai!

Before we begin, let’s talk about how Thai writing works.

Thai writing may look complicated at first, but the basic idea is actually quite simple.

There are three things we’re going to learn about:

    Consonants

These are the main Thai letters.

    Vowels (in English A,E,I,O,U)

Vowels are added to the consonants to create sounds.

    Tone marks

These are small marks that can change the tone of a syllable.

And one useful thing to know immediately:

Thai doesn’t have capital and lowercase letters.

So you don’t have to learn two versions of every letter.

Don’t worry about understanding all the details yet. We’ll introduce them gradually.

    Begin Here

Today we’re going to start learning the Thai alphabet in a slightly different way.

Instead of simply trying to memorise unfamiliar shapes, we’re going to use memory hooks to make the letters easier to recognise.

    The method is simple:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

    • First, look carefully at the Thai letter.
    • Then, try to see something familiar in its shape.
    • Next, connect that image to the letter’s sound.
    • Finally, practise and review it until it becomes familiar.

Don’t worry if you don’t remember everything immediately. That’s completely normal. We’ll keep coming back to these letters through drilling, testing and review.

    Today’s Five Letters

Today, we’re going to learn our first five Thai consonants.

Just look. Don’t worry about remembering yet.

    Thai letterSoundThai name
    ก g/k (good, gate)ก ไก่ (gor gai)
    ขkh (kite)ข ไข่ (khor khai)
    คkh (kite)ค ควาย (khor khwai)
    มm (man)ม ม้า (mor ma)
    นn (nose)น หนู (nor nuu)

For now, your main goal is simple:

    • Recognise each letter and remember its basic sound.
    • You don’t need to learn to read Thai words yet.
    • You don’t need to memorise the traditional names yet.
    • For now, we’re training your eyes to recognise the letters.

    Meet the Letters

Now let’s take a closer look at each letter.

Don’t just look at the character and try to memorise it.

Instead, look at its shape and try to see the picture inside it.

That picture will become your memory hook.

    Letter 1 — ก

    Sound: k, as in cat

Thai name: ก ไก่ (gor gai)

Memory hook: 🐔 Chicken and egg 🥚(g)

    Take a good look at:

    ก

    Can you see a chicken?

Imagine you’re looking at the chicken from the side.

The rounded part at the top is its head, and the little point sticking out to the left is its beak.

So imagine that ก is simply the head of a chicken looking to the left.

    Can you see it?

    ก 🐔

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ก → 🐔 Chicken → k

    Whenever you see ก, think:

    ก → Chicken → k

You don’t need to worry about the Thai name yet.

Just look at the shape, picture the chicken, and remember the k sound.

    Letter 2 — ข

Sound: kh, as in kite, with a little extra breath

Thai name: ข ไข่ (khor khai)

    Memory hook: 🐍 Cobra hissing

    Now look carefully at:

    ข

    Can you see a cobra?

Imagine the a cobra standing up and hissing. This is usually what it does when it feels threatened.

The tail is going along the ground to the right and sticking up behind the body.

Look carefully at the different parts of the shape and try to put them together in your mind as a cobra snake which is hissing.

    Can you see it?

    ข 🐍

    Excellent!

    Now make the connection:

    ข → 🐍 Cobra hissing→ kh

Remember, this is the kh sound, with a little extra breath.

For now, you don’t need to worry about the technical details. Just remember:

    ข → Cobra → kh

    Letter 3 — ค

    Sound: kh, as in kite

Thai name: ค ควาย (khor khwai)

    Memory hook: 👁️ Cyclops head

    Now take a look at:

    ค

Can you see a cyclops head?

Look at the large rounded part of the character.

Imagine it is the head of a strange creature, with the eye in the middle.

    A cyclops has one eye.

That’s the important thing to remember.

Can you see your Cyclops head?

    ค 👁️

    Good!

    Now make the connection:

    ค → 👁️ Cyclops head→ kh

    Notice something important:

ข and ค both have the basic kh sound.

That’s why the memory hooks are useful.

    ข → Cobra hissing→ kh

    ค → Cyclops head→ kh

The sounds are similar, but the pictures help you tell the letters apart.

    Letter 4 — ม

    Sound: m, as in man

Thai name: ม ม้า (mor ma)

    Memory hook: 🔄 Upside-down M

This one is nice and simple.

    Take a look at

    ม

What does it remind you of?

If you turn the letter around it becomes an M.

    So imagine:

    ม → turn it upside down → M

Can you see the upside-down M?

    ม

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    ม → 🔄 Upside-down M → m

    Whenever you see ม, think:

    ม → Upside-down M → m

    Easy!

    Letter 5 — น

    Sound: n, as in nose

Thai name: น หนู (nor nuu)

Memory hook: 👃 Nose and ear

    Now look at:

    น

What does the shape remind you of?

Look carefully at the character and imagine it is a face looking to the right.

See the little loop going downwards at the bottom right?

Imagine that is a nose hanging down from a face. And the other loop on the left is an ear. Nose and ear.

The face is looking to the right and the nose is hanging down.

    Can you see it?

    น 👃

    Great!

    Now make the connection:

    น → 👃 Nose and ear→ n

    Whenever you see น, think:

    น → Nose and ear→ n

    Let’s Put Them Together

Now look at all five letters again:

    ก ข ค ม น

Before you think about the sounds, try to see the pictures.

    ก → 🐔 Chicken → k

    ข → 🐍 Cobra hissing→ kh

    ค → 👁️ Cyclops head→ kh

    ม → 🔄 Upside-down M → m

    น → 👃 Nose and ear→ n

Don’t worry if you can’t remember all five perfectly yet.

The important thing is that you’re actively looking at the shape and trying to see the picture.

That’s how we’re going to continue learning in Super Speed Thai:

    Look → Imagine → Connect → Repeat

    Drill 1 — Letter → Sound

    Now let’s test your recognition.

Try to answer each one before looking at the answers.

    2. ข = ?
    3. ค = ?

    5. น = 👃 Nose and ear- n

    Drill 2 — Memory Hook → Letter
